Friedländer Early Netherlandish Painting

Max Jakob Friedländer (1867-1958) was the first art historian to compile an inventory of Old Netherlandish paintings. His fourteen-volume series, Early Netherlandish Painting, is still the reference for studying the Flemish Primitives. This publication can be downloaded. It also laid the foundations for the creation of our Friedländer database.

You can download a scanned version of Friedländer's 14-volume Early Netherlandish Painting for non-commercial, educational, and research purposes only. This publication was produced between 1967 and 1973 with the support of the governments of Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands under their cultural cooperation agreements.

The Centre for the Study of the Flemish Primitives and the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) were closely involved in this project, both on the scientific committee and the editorial board. The publication was directed by Ernest Goldschmidt, with the original copyright belonging to A.W. Sijthoff's Uitgeversmaatschappij, Leiden. It is the most comprehensive reference work for researchers of early Dutch painting.

Digitisation of the series

In 2013, Acmis in Antwerp professionally digitised the series as part of KIK-IRPA's digitization policy. Despite several attempts to contact this publication's current rights holders, we could not reach them. If you believe your copyrights have been infringed, don't hesitate to contact KIK-IRPA.
