Les Heures de La Tramerie, un manuscrit vagabond (Paris, vers 1430 - Tournai, vers 1510-1520)
In December 2015 the Claire and Michel Lemay Fund of the King Baudouin Foundation acquired a luxurious book of hours. This remarkable manuscript was produced in three phases spread over almost a century. Commissioned in Paris around 1430 and left unfinished, the Tramerie Hours passed through northern France before being fully decorated and illustrated in Tournai in the first quarter of the 16th century.
The book is particularly important for the understanding of Tournaisian art, a signpost for reconstructing the work of a previously unknown local illuminator, the Master of Hugues de Loges.
This book painter, in turn, is the central figure of a little-known chapter in the history of “Flemish” art: book painting in the southern part of the Habsburg Netherlands, at the crucial moment when the Italian Renaissance overturned local traditions rooted in late Gothic art.
Le Maître de Hugues de Loges est au centre de la publication. (...) Tout cela constitue un apport très important à la connaissance de l'enluminure tournaisienne - d'autant qu'il s'agit d'une période jusqu'ici peu étudiée - et d'une manière plus générale à la connaissance de la production enluminée des Pays-Bas méridionaux.
Les Heures de la Tramerie is een boek dat af is, naar inhoud en naar vorm. De tekst leest heerlijk, de illustraties zijn van een uitstekende kwaliteit, bijlagen werken verdiepend, en achterin steken uitstekende samenvattingen in het Nederlands en het Engels, een verzorgde bibliografie en een accuraat register.
The book was awarded the Joseph-Edmond Marchal Prize by the Belgian Royal Academy of Science, Literature and Fine Arts (Arts Section) in 2023.
