KIK-IRPA, art and science at BRAFA 2025
The Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) is proud of its new collaboration with BRAFA on the 70th anniversary of the art fair. This year's Brussels Art Fair will take place from 26 January to 2 February 2025.
As Belgium’s leading centre for the study and conservation of the artistic and cultural heritage of the country, KIK-IRPA is excited to share its expertise and passion for art, history, and science on its own stand at BRAFA (n° 136).
Visit our stand
At BRAFA 2025, KIK-IRPA will have its own space (n° 136) next to the King Baudouin Foundation stand. The Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage will showcase the many facets of its work, from art conservation and restoration to heritage management and scientific analysis.
Visitors can discover how specialists analyse and document artworks, revealing insights into their history and craftsmanship.
For KIK-IRPA, participation in BRAFA provides an opportunity to engage with a warm audience of art lovers, collectors, dealers and professionals.
Take part in the workshops
This year, for the first time, there will be BRAFA Art Workshops. This is a new concept and complements the BRAFA Art Talks, organised by the King Baudouin Foundation. These hands-on workshops will offer attendees the chance to learn how to care for artworks and explore the technologies used in modern conservation.
Experts will also share fascinating discoveries from their research, illustrating how scientific methods and modern technology are unlocking new dimensions of understanding in historical works of art.
Practical information
BRAFA is one of Europe's most prestigious art fairs, an exceptional 8-day interlude featuring rare works from Antiquity to the twenty-first century.
BRAFA will celebrate its 70th edition and it will bring together approximately 130 galleries from all over Europe and beyond at Brussels Expo from Sunday, January 26th to Sunday, February 2nd, 2025. On behalf of the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage and the Church Board of Saint James' Antwerp, we would like to sincerely thank everyone – both those in attendance and other donors – for their support and generosity.

Conservation of the Ghent Altarpiece continues to reveal the unparalleled virtuosity of the Van Eyck brothers
As with the first two phases of the conservation-restoration project of the Ghent Altarpiece, the KIK-IRPA team has encountered extensive overpainting from the 16th century. The removal of the thick and often heavily darkened layers of paint requires significant time and concentration but gradually reveals the subtle nuances so characteristic of the Van Eyck brothers' painting technique.
