From Ennion, a Syro-Palestinian glassmaker of the 1st century AD, to Val Saint-Lambert, the great glass workshop of modern Europe, the technique of mould-blown glass spans some twenty centuries of creation. The first international colloquium on this theme, the 23rd Rencontres de l'Association française pour l'Archéologie du Verre (AFAV), held in October 2008, is continued in this richly illustrated volume of proceedings, published in KIK-IRPA's Scientia Artis series. Following a chronological framework, some forty original contributions give an account of current research on the history of mould-blown glass.
This resolutely multidisciplinary book combines the views of specialists from different fields and periods - archaeology, history, chemistry and technology, as well as conservation. A large place is reserved for unpublished or little-known discoveries. With its abundant illustrations, the book offers a veritable anthology of mould-blown glass production from Antiquity to the present day, and establishes precious scientific benchmarks for future research.
